This year marked the tenth anniversary of the CCWP newsletter The Fire Inside. A celebration of this occasion was held on November 7, 2006 at the African American Art and Culture Complex in San Francisco. This amazing event featured author Alice Walker as our guest of honor who read from her recently released book We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For and shared her thoughts on the prison industrial complex, the oppression of political prisoners in the United States, and the current state of our world.
The event, emceed by our Outreach Coordinator shawnna d., also featured performance group Rhythm and Echoes (formerly Drum Sistah Warriors), Loco Bloco, a youth group and performing arts ensemble based in the Mission District of San Francisco, and a powerful poem written by prisoner Hakim Anderson read by CCWP Member and poet Rashna Owens. Maisha Quint from Poetry for the People and poet Kuda also performed and Sherrie Green, mother of a woman prisoner in California, spoke on the change we are working for.
A highlight of the event was the long-awaited raffle of the stunning quilt made by All of Us or None co-founder, former political prisoner and CCWP supporter and board member Linda Evans. The quilt which she named ?Keep on Dreamin?: A Quilt the Size of My 3-Person Cell? was the size of the cell she spent 16 years in while in federal prison.
The program of the event featured more writing and poetry by people incarcerated in women?s prisons in California as well as a time line of all of the issues of The Fire Inside over the years. The celebration was a true success and was very well received by all of the supporters and community members who attended, many of whom were energized by the event to become more involved in CCWP?s work. We all look forward to many more years of this phenomenal newsletter written by and for women, transgender, and gender variant prisoners in California women?s prisons, and send our sincere gratitude to all those who have contributed their writing and support to this newsletter in the past ten years.
