Fast 4 Freedom Day of Action

Fast 4 Freedom Day of Action

On August 6, 2010, prisoners
and their loved ones initiated
a statewide day of fasting and
solidarity actions?a FAST4FREEDOM.
The goal of the day
of action was to spread
awareness about the extreme
injustices faced by prisoners,
their families and their communities.
Rallies were held
in front of legislative offi ces
in Fresno, Indio, Los Angeles,
Sacramento and San
Francisco. Prisoners fasted
around the state, including at
CCWF and VSPW and dozens
fasted outside in solidarity.
Demands included reducing
the prison population, ending
three strikes, releasing prisoners
eligible for parole, releasing sick,
aged and terminally ill prisoners,
family visits for all prisoners,
ending the death penalty and
education not incarceration.

In San Francisco, the day?s
events were sponsored by the
CURB Alliance. A spirited rally
was held with over 50 participants
including former prisoners,
family members of prisoners and
advocates from a variety of organizations.
There was drumming
and moving poetry which included
many beautiful poems from
prisoners. Participants also visited
the offi ces of Mark Leno, Senate
Public Safety Committee,
Tom Ammiano,
Assembly Public Safety
Committee, and Fiona
Ma, Assemblywoman,
bringing their attention
to pending legislation
such as SB399, which,
if it had passed, would
have reformed Juvenile
Life Without Parole sentences.
The day?s events
made more visible some
of the fundamental problems with
California?s prison system and
allowed prisoners, loved ones and
advocates to forge stronger bonds
across the walls.
