Vonda White was released on November 18th after nearly 30 years of incarceration. Her release was the result of a successful habeas writ challenging the Governor?s reversal of her 2006 parole date. Vonda?s freedom is the result of the hard work of many people who have supported her over the years. Her attorney, Michael Marrinan, represented Vonda for years. Carl McQuillion helped as a prisoner advocate paralegal, and Linda Buchalter represented Vonda at parole hearings. We also would like to recognize Jeri
Becker Nager, who is a long time friend and former roommate of Vonda?s and a member of Free Battered Women who has been central to the fight for Vonda?s freedom.
Delores Salkeld, Angela Clark and Georgette Jackson have also been released.
On November 21, 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger released his decision to reverse the Board of Parole Hearings? decision to grant parole to ?Daisy? Jane Benson. Ms. Benson is a 60-year-old battered woman who has served nearly 21 years on a 17-to-life sentence for the death of her friend. Ms. Benson has worked hard to transform herself while in prison. She has emerged as a leader among her peers at the California Institution for Women, particularly within Convicted Women Against Abuse.
