This week YJC members and FREE L.A. High School students are burying two
childhood friends both of who were killed by the police. Those killed or
injured by the police are always claimed by law enforcement to be “under
investigation” as “ suspects.” Therefore, they are not eligible for support
from “Victims of Crime.” Families struggle to bury their loved ones without
any of the usual financial support. They also suffer even more, since the
police and other public officials criminalize the victim in the media before
the start of any investigation – re-victimizing the victim and adding to the
pain suffered by families, friends and community. Similarly, law
enforcement is slow to share information with families – even the fact that
their loved one was shot or their health status, or their location (in a
hospital or morgue).

Monday, Lynwood will bury Johnathan "Dough Boi" Cuevas, 20 born 6/5/90,
killed by L.A. County Sheriffs 10/10/10.

Jonathan, his family and the YJC still don’t have many details of the
shooting except that witneses say he was shot 7 times. YJC members who grew
up with him wrote this description: “He was a loving son, father, and
friend. He was a known street artist, and before his killing he was trying
to get out of the bulls#@t of the streets. The nonsense killings of some of
our friends because of (tagging) crew stuff! Hit him hard! He was admired by
many lil’ homies and was loved by all who knew him! He had a job to support
his wife and son and was looking forward to going back to school. His life
was suddenly taken at 12:35 am early Sunday morning, October 10th by our
community police. (Lynwood is under the jurisdiction of the L.A. County
Sheriffs Depertment. So far, we have not much details, except that he was
gunned down seven times!

James Davis, who just turned 18 – nicknamed Mookie by his family – was shot
and killed on the afternoon of Thursday, October 7th by officers from the
Los Angeles Police Department Southeast Division in the Imperial Courts
Housing Development in Watts.

On that same day, there was a funeral of a shooting victim from another
neighborhood who was killed while he was hanging out in the Imperial Courts
– Lil’ Donut from Fudge Town – and concerns were running high in the
development about possible retaliation. The officers involved in the
shooting immediately claimed that Davis had pointed a gun at them.
Witnesses stated that James had thrown his gun away prior to the shooting,
and that police shot him in the back as he was running away. Captain
Tangerides of the Southeast Division of the LAPD confirmed in a public
meeting of the Watts Gang Task Force on Tuesday that Davis was, in fact,
shot in the back.

Los Angeles County has long led the nation in officer-involved
shootings, but the past two years have been even more deadly. From January
2007 through October 2010, there have been more than 150 fatal
officer-involved shootings in Los Angeles County.

In later updates, we will bring you the list of victims over the past 2
years, stories from families and friends, as well as opportunities to end
police violence in L.A. County. But, for now, please help to support the
grieving families: Today, there is a car wash to raise money for Jonathan
Cuevas’ funeral in the church parking lot on Santa Fe and Banning in
Lynwood. Donations for the family can be dropped off or mailed to Chuco’s
Justice Center. (The address is on the bottom of this action update.)
Please put your donation into a sealed envelop and address the envelop to
the victim. Click
