Friends,
I have visited Laverne Dejohnette for the past three years in prison in
Chowchilla, California. Dejohnette has been imprisoned since 1994 on a Life
Without Parole (LWOP) sentence.  She is a resilient, thoughtful woman who
shouldn't have a living death sentence.

Dejohnette doesn't dwell on her childhood history of incest and sex
trafficking as the background for her offense.  She takes responsibility
for the harm she has done to others but at the same time knows that she has
changed enormously since 1994 and deserves a chance for parole.

The Governor's investigative team, the Parole Board and the California
Supreme Court have all recommended Dejohnette for a commutation of her LWOP
sentence.  If her sentence is commuted she would then be eligible for a
Parole hearing regarding her release.
